What Serious Medical Problems Are Caused by Pinnacle Hip Implants?

Johnson & Johnson and DePuy Orthopaedics are facing thousands of lawsuits due to their defective metal-on-metal hip implants. Pinnacle hip implants, which are produced by Johnson & Johnson’s subsidiary DePuy Orthopaedics, are linked to multiple adverse health outcomes. Some of the adverse outcomes are caused by metallosis, a type of metal poisoning. Metal-on-metal hip implants could lead to the following serious medical problems:

  1. Hip and groin pain. The FDA warns that metal-on-metal hip implants may cause hip and groin pain that make walking difficult. You may also notice swelling and numbness.
  2. Neurological changes. Chromium and cobalt ions from the device could enter your bloodstream and cause neurological changes. You may experience auditory or visual problems. Depression and cognitive problems are also possible negative health outcomes caused by metal toxicity.
  3. Organ damage. Metal poisoning may affect your kidney, thyroid and heart function. You could develop cardiomyopathy, a condition that limits your heart’s ability to pump blood to the rest of your body.
  4. Tissue death and bone erosion. Pinnacle hip implants are linked to tissue death and bone erosion. In November, a Texas jury ordered Johnson & Johnson and DePuy to pay $247 million to six patients who suffered tissue death, bone erosion and other problems after being implanted with these devices.

Revision surgeries may sometimes be necessary to repair or mitigate the damage caused by these devices.

How Do I Know if My Pinnacle Hip Implant is Causing Damage?

You could experience multiple symptoms if your Pinnacle hip implant is causing harm. Be on the lookout for physical symptoms that include numbness, pain, swelling and redness near the hip and groin. You could also watch for symptoms of metallosis, some of which we have described above. Changes in joint function or your ability to walk could also signal problems with your implant.

It is important to seek medical attention if you are experiencing these symptoms. We have a list of questions on our website that you could bring with you to your doctor’s appointment.
