DePuy Orthopaedics, the company responsible for the creation of a series of medical devices, is facing yet another lawsuit related to the Pinnacle acetabular cup system used in artificial hip replacements. The plaintiff, Glenn K., and his wife, Diane K., state that Glenn underwent total hip arthroplasty in early 2010. He was implanted with a Pinnacle acetabular cup system.
After his surgery, the lawsuit reports that Glenn began to suffer injuries resulting from the cobalt-chromium components of the Pinnacle hip replacement. As the metal head of the hip replacement rubbed against the metal liner, over time, a significant amount of cobalt-chromium metal ions and particles were released into Glenn’s bloodstream, traveling throughout his body and causing symptoms of metallosis. This led to severe pain, discomfort, inflammation and potentially, other side effects.
The pain did not stop for Glenn there. Because of the chronic discomfort and inflammation caused by the implant, Glenn was forced to undergo expensive and painful revision surgery. His hip implant was removed and replaced with another one in 2017.

Many recipients of these defective hip implants share Glenn’s story. Unfortunately, the implants can lead to significant pain and suffering, diminished quality of life, lost wages, expensive medical bills and more. If you are the recipient of a Pinnacle acetabular cup system, you may be entitled to damages for your pain and suffering. Many have been asking for updates on the status of the appeal in the second Pinnacle Metal on Metal hip trial. The appeal was argued on December 6, 2017. According to the website for the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, “the court’s goal is to issue an opinion generally within 60 days after argument or submission.” This would put the expected date for an opinion on or about February 6, 2018. Stay tuned.
The process of having a metal-on-metal hip implant installed is a painful one, with a long recovery period that will almost certainly affect your life and livelihood. And as you recover, you may start to notice certain side effects and complications relating to your implant. Some of these are perfectly normal, but others are not.
Many metal-on-metal hip implants have been recalled by the FDA for complications that can lead to injury. Most hip replacement surgeries have positive outcomes, but others may not. These poor outcomes are often due to defects in the metal-on-metal hip replacement that cause it to malfunction. And when this happens, the victim could be forced to undergo revision surgery, sometimes multiple times.
How can you identify when a metal-on-metal implant, like the DePuy Pinnacle implant, may be defective?
